Hi, I'm Emily and welcome
to my site. I hope you will find it interesting. There are two main
sections, my art work and my cards. My art work can be seen in the
gallery.
Here you can see some thumbnails of my major pieces, and click through
to some full page photos, with some close up shots. The second section
is my cards, which range from
traditional
designs, those directly incorporating my art
work, and some novel creature
cards. I accept orders from both trade and individuals.
In the non virtual world you can see my
work at various galleries and exhibitions.
You can also read a critical review of my work.
Have fun ! |

What
?

|
My name is Emily Chapman
and I am a craftsperson. I've been making various objects since an early
age with encouragement from my family.
I formally studied 'Crafts and Visual Studies' at the Norwich School of Art and Design, from which I graduated in 1997. I am now a full member of the locally renowned Suffolk Crafts Society |
My main fascination
is textile crafts involving fabrics. I recently completed a selection
of bags using traditional skills
and very modern design to put together some work that is both decorative
and functional. Previously my work was concentrated on framed
assemblages, and plaster pots.
The framed pieces consist of small segments of cloth, wire, buttons and
pins put together in a pleasing arrangement. The posts are
constructed from slabs of Plaster of Paris with thread and wire construction
details. I also completed as set of vessels
using plain closely woven cloths and silver wire. The vessels are decorated
using threads and beads, often inverting or exploding the hidden workmanship
found in traditional craft pieces. Finally I have been busy making
some cards, some of which support
my main work, and some of which are just a bit of fun. The textile
cards are now available ready framed
as many people have commented that they have framed the cards they have
bought.

Why
?
|
|
My inspirations come
from traditional textile crafts and associated items, such as buttons,
along with the cloth itself. I'm interested in manipulating the base
material in conjunction with decorative details to create unique forms.
The use of whites and subtle creams creates an overall feeling of delicacy,
while taking advantage of the simplicity of colour to accentuate the areas
of light created by the folds, gathers and movement of the fabric.
All of my pieces work well when top or back lit. Button
in particular almost glows when top lit
